Eye Tracking of Occluded Self-Moved Targets: Role of Haptic Feedback and Hand-Target Dynamics

Previous studies on smooth pursuit eye movements have shown that humans can continue to track the position of their hand, or a target controlled by the hand, after it is occluded, thereby demonstrating that arm motor commands contribute to the prediction of target motion driving pursuit eye movements. Here, we investigated this predictive mechanism by manipulating both the complexity of the han...

A New Modified Particle Filter With Application in Target Tracking

The particle filter (PF) is a novel technique that has sufficiently good estimation results for the nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. However, PF is inconsistent that caused mainly by loss of particle diversity in resampling step and unknown a priori knowledge of the noise statistics. This paper introduces a new modified particle filter called adaptive unscented particle filter (AUPF) to overcome th...

Target interception: hand-eye coordination and strategies.

This study was designed to define the characteristics of eye-hand coordination in a task requiring the interception of a moving target. It also assessed the extent to which the motion of the target was predicted and the strategies subjects used to determine when to initiate target interception. Target trajectories were constructed from sums of sines in the horizontal and vertical dimensions. Su...

Eye-Hand Synergy and Intermittent Behaviors during Target-Directed Tracking with Visual and Non-visual Information

Visual feedback and non-visual information play different roles in tracking of an external target. This study explored the respective roles of the visual and non-visual information in eleven healthy volunteers who coupled the manual cursor to a rhythmically moving target of 0.5 Hz under three sensorimotor conditions: eye-alone tracking (EA), eye-hand tracking with visual feedback of manual outp...

Eye tracking of observer-generated target movements.

When an observer moves his arm he shows more precise visual tracking of a target mounted on his fingertip-the eye lags behind the target less and makes fewer corrective saccades-than when he relaxes his arm and the experimenter moves it in a similar manner. Apparently the control system for eye movements can use outflow (efferent) signals in order to anticipate motion of the self-moved target.
